Red Blown Glass Vase with White Threads

Texture + color + glass. It's a combination I can't resist. Feel the same way? Don't worry, it's okay to touch.

For this piece, I gathered clear glass from the 2000 degree furnace and created a bubble. Then I melted and shaped a bar of transparent red glass which I used to cover the initial clear bubble. Then I gathered clear twice more and blew it into shape. Before transferring the piece to a punty for final shaping, I added a thin wrap of white in sweeping arches.

Measures approximately: Just over 8.25” high; 3.75” across interior opening; 4.5” at widest. You can feel the wrap on the outside--adding extra texture and character.

This piece is part of a series I'm exploring with glass "threads." When I'm not in the glass studio, you might just find me crocheting--on the metro, at a craft show or on a quiet night. A pile of yarn was on the table next to some of my glass--and the two looked quite nice together. So I set out to combine the two by recreating my own threads in glass.
